The Redesigned 2020 Closer to Free Ride

In a year when a global pandemic has changed everything, the 2020 Closer to Free Ride presented by Bank of America needs to be redesigned. While public health concerns and local regulations will prevent us from gathering together in person on September 12, we can still unite from wherever we are to deliver the hope, love and support that Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center need. Registered CTF Riders will still be able to cycle and Volunteers may join us and choose another activity to raise essential funds for those who need it most. There’s no fundraising minimum, but the need for funding is even greater now, so we’ll have suggested fundraising minimums and rewards to keep you challenged and inspired. As always, 100% of the funds we raise will go to the unparalleled research and care at Smilow and Yale Cancer Center.

The Closer to Free Ride delivers an incredible event experience from the time you register - and this is still true for our 2020 event. From the moment you register for our redesigned 2020 event, you’ll be part of the awesome Closer to Free Ride community and have access to a variety of activities and programs. We’ll soon be launching new interactive ways to come together even as we remain safely apart. Most importantly, on September 12th we’ll connect from far and wide for a Closer to Free Ride experience complete with a reimagined Smilow Salute to celebrate our 10th year and the incredible accomplishments of the Closer to Free Ride community.

Every dollar you raise supports patient care and research at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center. That’s right: One hundred percent of the funds you raise as a Ride participant go directly to patient care and advanced research. There’s no fundraising minimum for our 2020 ride, but the need for funding is even greater now, so we suggest each adult rider raise at least $500 and each youth rider raise $250. No matter what amount you raise or contribute, you can be confident that your dollars will be put to good work in New Haven and beyond.

NEW THIS YEAR: OUR 10-YEAR CHALLENGE! This year marks the Closer to Free Ride’s TENTH year! While we had hoped to celebrate this milestone together, we will now do so apart. To help connect our community and commemorate our tenth year, we are challenging our CTF Ride community to ride 100,000 miles collectively in advance Ride Day. Here’s how this will work:

  • Join our new Strava Club, create a free account (if you don’t already have one) and make sure you log in every time you ride  so your miles are counted towards our total goal. We’ll give weekly mileage updates on our Facebook page and shoutouts to our Strava Club ride leaders!  You can even link your Peloton account to your Strava account so the miles you ride at home can count toward our goal, too.
  • In early August a new and improved version of the CTF Ride App will be live and include activity tracking features, Strava integration and more. If you have not already downloaded the app, do so today for iOS or Android.
